How to Stick With Your Home Workouts This Summer
Summer is the season for abundant sunshine, happiness, and relaxation. However, for many people, the thought of shedding their baggy winter clothes and revealing more skin makes it hard to truly relax. It’s easier to hide our bodies away in the winter time, where the cold weather and line-up of feasting holidays makes it all too easy to gain some unwanted weight. For those that want to get themselves back to a beach-ready body but would rather avoid the gym, home workouts can be the perfect option. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a gym membership or a trainer yelling in your face in order to shed those extra pounds in time for beach season. Your ideal summer bod can be easily achieved with home workouts by following three simple steps.
The positive impact of visualization is often quite underrated. This mental technique can be a very powerful motivator for change and yet many people take it for granted. However, visualizing your body looking, feeling, and moving the way you want it to can really help. Many people have a goal in mind for how they want to look, but there’s often a level of disconnection between them. You may have an idea of how you’d like to look or feel but have never imagined actually looking or feeling that way. And if you feel disconnected from your goal before you even begin your home workouts, how on earth are you ever going to be successful?
Visualization is the first step of setting you on the path towards change. Take a moment, sit down in a quiet space, and close your eyes. Think about reaching your ultimate goal. Feel your body underneath you, how it fits in your clothes, how you feel when you move. Imagine the things you’ll be able to do that you can’t do now. Visualize how your life will change, how your health will improve, how people will respond to you differently.
Take a few minutes each day and perform this visualization exercise. The more you do it, the more concrete the image will be in your mind and the clearer the path ahead will be. If your path is clear and certain, then it becomes infinitely easier to commit yourself to a life of health and fitness. It will also become easier to achieve lasting results.
Make a Plan
The second step to having successful and impactful home workouts is to make a clear and actionable plan. Don’t leave your home workouts to only the days that you “feel” like doing them. These days will be fewer and farther in between than many of us will ever admit. In order to be successful and see results, you have to push yourself on the days you don’t “feel like it”.
This is where making a plan can really help you achieve success. The excuses can easily mount up. “I don’t want to work out today because I have a headache. I’ll do it tomorrow.” And, when tomorrow comes, it turns into “I slept in a little late today and I don’t want to be late, so I’ll workout later on.” And, later on, “I’m tired from my day, I’ll workout tomorrow for real.” On and on the cycle can go. However, if you know that tomorrow is Wednesday and that’s the day you workout, then you don’t have as much of an excuse to skip it. You go to bed knowing “I can’t sleep in tomorrow because it’s Wednesday.” You wake up saying, “I don’t feel the greatest today, but it’s Wednesday so I’m going to workout.”
Don’t let yourself slide because your exercise is left to chance. Write it down, and make it clear. “I’m going to exercise Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings before work. I’m going to take a yoga class every Sunday at 4 pm.” Know where, when, and how you’re going to workout. Make sure you schedule it for times that your schedule is always free. That way, you’ll have less distraction and less reason to bail.
Make it Verbal
One way to help guarantee success with your home workouts is to publicize your commitment to change. When many people start working out, they’re afraid to tell others because they worry about having witnesses to a potential failure. If no one knows you’re trying to lose weight, then no one will care if you aren’t able to. However, this type of defeatist attitude really isn’t conducive to success.
By telling those you know about what you’re trying to do, you’re making a verbal commitment. You’re also giving yourself the opportunity to receive support and encouragement from friends and loved ones. When hearing about what you’re trying to do, others you know will undoubtedly wish you luck. You may even inspire some to look at their own health and resolve to make changes.
If you really want a way to help yourself stick to your home workouts, make a contest out of it. Bet your friend or significant other that you can lose (or gain) a certain amount of weight by a certain date. The bet doesn’t have to be extravagant, but the stakes feel more real when you actually stand to lose something.
