Reasons Why You Aren’t Hitting Your Fitness Goals
Are you working out and staying motivated but still aren’t getting the results you are looking for? It can be frustrating going above and beyond to improve your fitness without seeing any changes for the better. It’s best to follow the age-old strategy of ‘work smarter, not harder,’ when you are trying to meet fitness goals. Let’s look at some reasons why you may have hit a plateau.
Not Enough Sleep
Did you know that sleep deprived men over 30 have up to a 15% lower testosterone level? Testosterone is a hormone that has been directly linked to both strength and muscle mass. By losing sleep, you deprive your body of of the hormones necessary to support muscle development. On top of low testosterone, losing sleep also reduces how driven and motivated you are, making you less likely to exercise. Finally, losing sleep makes you more likely to crave unhealthy foods. If you aren’t getting the results you are looking for, adjust your sleep schedule.
After a long workout, many people feel that they deserve a treat. You just put in an intense workout, what could be the harm in getting fast food? Unfortunately, one meal of unhealthy food can undo the progress of multiple workouts. If you burn 500 calories in a powerful workout and then eat 1000 calories from a burger and fries, you are actually worse off then when you started. This is why it’s so important to stop rewarding yourself with food. Treat yourself to a movie instead, but without the buttery popcorn! Stop taking one step forward and two steps back on the road to your fitness goals.
Counting Calories, Ignoring Sugar
Are you getting enough sleep, counting calories, exercising regularly but still not getting results? It could be that you are focusing too much on how many calories you are taking in rather than the substance of the food you eat. A huge factor in getting results is the amount of sugar you consume. Sugar contains two molecules, glucose and fructose. Fructose is not produced naturally by humans and it turns into fat after being metabolized by the liver.
Too much sugar creates an abundance of fat that is secreted into the bloodstream, blocking you from reaching your fitness goals. Unfortunately, sugar is everywhere and it can be easy to go over the daily recommended intake. It’s beneficial to talk to a nutritionist about your diet and adjust your food intake accordingly.
Working Out Too Hard
When it comes to exercise, it is possible to get ‘too much of a good thing.’ Even if you don’t have any limits on how far you will push yourself, your body does. If you push beyond what your body can handle, it can be difficult to achieve your fitness goals. Surprisingly, your body doesn’t build muscle as you work out. It builds muscle while you are resting. This means that if you work out every single day, you aren’t giving your body the downtime it requires to recover and allow muscle growth. However, this doesn’t mean you should drastically cut down your workout. Simply give your body the downtime it requires and you should hit your goals in no time.
It should be no surprise that sitting around all day creates a number of health concerns such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat and abnormal cholesterol levels. What is surprising however, is that even vigorous exercise isn’t enough to offset these risks. If you sit in an office all day without moving and go home, exercise, and plop in front of the TV, you aren’t going to achieve your fitness goals easily. The trick is to periodically get up and move around to break up long stretches of sitting.
